Help Save The Kauai Cats At Lydgate Beach Park
As you may have heard, there was discussion about the County of Kauai hiring a company for "predator eradication" including the community cats of Lydgate Beach Park. Kani Wildlife Control LLC has been hired through a 3-year grant of $385,000.
Initially, we found out they were going to remove the cats during a maintenance closure of the campground from Nov 12 - 21st. Several people jumped into action and contacted the Mayor and Dept of Parks and Rec about this planned event. The County of Kauai claimed no such event was taking place which bought us some time. We don't know when they will be targeting Lydgate Beach Park, but our goal is to get them out of the park ASAP.
We are in the process of setting up a sanctuary location to house the cats. We need help. We first must purchase and erect a specific type of cat fence to keep the cats in, and pigs and chickens out. We also need to find help to erect this fence. The following are just some of the things we need help with to continue:
~ We will need manpower/womanpower help to erect a fence
~ We need help moving some shelters we have for the property
~ We need monetary donations to buy fencing and to buy some free-standing kennels/catios to segregate cats when needed. (Ask us about a really cool Ferret Habitat that works PAWsome for cats and cost about $350 each if you want to sponsor one.)
~ We need an ongoing supply of food and litter -
~ We need litter pans, old cat trees (or new), bedding for the cats to sleep on
~ We need people willing to take 1 day a week to feed the cats - morning or night (or both if you are super energetic. (both locations in Kapaa/Wailua Homesteads area) The workload is light with many hands helping.
~ We will need help trapping if this is something you know how to do and you have or can borrow traps.
We are still working out this whole process and will be adding more as we keep working. Be sure to check back as often as you can to stay updated. Join Our Newsletter to stay updated by email.
